Cupboard Maker Books: Making Dreams Come True

Updated: Oct 13

In the quiet town of Enola, Pennsylvania, there's a place where the scent of well-worn pages mingles with the gentle purring of feline companions. Cupboard Maker Books, a beloved independent bookstore, is not just a place to find your next read; it's a haven for book lovers, a sanctuary for cats, and a community hub. This literary gem is the brainchild of Michelle and Jason, a couple whose passion for books, local authors, and feline friends led them to create a unique space that has been a local favorite for years.

Why/How did you start your business?

We started the bookstore because Michelle (me) always wanted a used bookstore since I worked at one as a teen. I love books and cats so it is the best of all worlds. We added the new books because I love working with local authors and recommending my favorites some of which never come in used.

Jason was wholesaling custom built painted furniture, and he wanted an in person location so he began The Cupboard Maker in 1998. When we had Riley, I became a stay in the bookstore mom.

How do you define success?

Success for us is uniting readers with their new favorite books. Also for us, it is being able to be in the bookstore full time and do what we love. We also define success by the over 200 cats we've helped find forever homes.

We interupt this regularly scheduled article for a word from the author

Michelle and Jason are too humble. As one of the local authors that Cupboard Maker Books has opened their arms to, I had to add a little something to this article. As if books and cats didn't convince you to visit them, let's talk about all they do for local authors.

This is a bookstore that doesn't sit back and only accept the largest bestsellers certain to sell. These are book lovers who support local, independent authors, with vigor! I've been blessed with fantastic reception for my novel series, but it certainly hasn't hurt to have Michelle championing my books. She took an early and passionate interest in my characters and in myself.

Maybe it seems obvious that bookstores would build relationships with authors, but I assure you, that's not the case. Michelle, Jason, and Cupboard Maker Books stands out as a haven for independent authors, a source of community, and growth. Interested in a book club? They have it. And not just for one genre-for nearly all of them. Interested in becoming a more skilled writer? They've got you covered there, too!

Cupboard Maker's reputation among local indie authors is a positive, warm, and welcoming one. I'm proud to count myself among their community and dare you to walk through their doors and not feel the same genuine joy at seeing you. I hope to see you there!
